Tomorrow is our last day of the school year for 2015, what an amazing year we have had in ICT. I have had a wonderful year with all the students and are very proud of their efforts and achievements.  I would like to wish the students and their families a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday and enjoy this special time of year as we celebrate the birth of Jesus.

The Hour of Code

This week in ICT the Grade 4-6 students will take part in the Hour of Code.

The Hour of Code was created to give students the opportunity to learn computer science.

Code

The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries. There are a series of One-hour tutorials which are available in over 40 languages. No experience needed.

https://code.org/learn

During ICT  we will be discussing the things in our everyday life that use computer science: a mobile phone, a microwave, a computer, a traffic light. All of these things needed a computer scientist to help build them. The students will get to experience coding by completing one of the Hour of Code tutorials.

Here are the links to a number of tutorials.  Click on the one you would like to complete and remember to print your certificate when you have finished.  Good Luck and have fun coding!

Grade 5 Cyber Safety Mind Map

The grade 5 students have been revisiting Cyber safety and Netiquette.  During ICT they have completed various online Cyber safety activities and Quizzes.

Click on the links to have a go at some Cybersafety and Nettiquette Activities; Netiquette Quiz,  Budd:e

The students are now using the online brainstorming tool bubbl.us to create a mind map of their understanding of Cyber safety.

Bubbl.us  is a Web 2.0 tool that enables users to create mind mapping and brainstorming diagrams online. To begin, the main topic/concept is entered in to the parent bubble. Then ideas and thoughts are recorded in colorful text bubbles linked to the parent bubble. Users continue to add text bubbles which are colour coded according to hierarchy.

The Grade 6 students are currently working through a Blogging Challenge.  Each week they are given new tasks to complete to develop their understanding and knowledge of blogging.  The weekly challenges have now been created as individual pages under the menu BLOGGING CHALLENGE.

Grade 6 Blogs

Thank you very much to all the parents, family, friends and students who have been regularly visiting and commenting on the class blogs.

This term our Grade 6 students have all become ‘bloggers’ creating their own individual blogs. At present they are working through a blogging challenge where they will have the opportunity to expand and demonstrate their blogging skills and knowledge.

I would like to encourage families to visit the student blogs and post some comments. The Blogs can be accessed via the Successful Sixes blog ( there you will find all the student blogs in a blogroll on the left side bar)

The students and teachers love to know that you are taking time out to visit their Blogs. Making comments and sharing your positive thoughts or even comments about your own learning will excite and motivate them to continue to share their learning with you and others around the world. It is safe and easy to use. (All comments are moderated by teachers.)

When posting comments please remember to adhere to our blogging guidelines. These guidelines have been put together to promote online safety for our students and families when blogging. (Guidelines can be found on all the class blogs)

Thank you for supporting the Trinity Students learning.

Adding Widgets

What are widgets?

During ICT the grade 6 students have been learning about Widgets and how to embed them into their student blogs.

The term widget refers to any tool or content that you add, arrange or remove from the sidebar(s) of your blog — these are the blocks that make up your sidebar

As a class we have discussed that when adding widgets it is important to think about the following questions; Does it add to your blog?  OR Does it distract readers from your posts? You need to have a balance between widgets and your blog content; you want people to read your posts!

The students have been creating and embedding a variety of widgets on their blogs the following widget is a favourite.

Voki

Voki allows you to create talking avatars which is excellent for speaking practice and engaging your audience.   Teachers and students also like to add them to their blog sidebar to welcome visitors to their blogs. You can embed Vokis in posts and pages also. Click the play button to listen to the Voki embedded in this post.  Click here to create your own Voki
